KEN FREEMAN

The earliest mention of this band is in the San Francisco Spokesman of 2 February 1933 when Ken Freeman and his Kollegians play for a walkathon.  After that they become Ken Freeman and his Californians, playing for dances in towns like Chualar, Vichy Springs and Emeryville.  A report in the San Jose Mercury of 5 May 1934 says that ‘Freeman’s syncopators have been playing at the Hotel Oakland and the famous Athena club and their appearance at Mill Road tonight marks the opening of their summer tour.’  They continue playing for dances in Vichy Springs, Mountain View, Jamestown etc. until July 1935 when they disappear from view.  I cannot identify Freeman with any certainty - he may be Kenneth Donald Freeman, born in Oakland on 8 December 1912 and died 24 August 1996, but there is nothing to suggest he was a musician.
